Books On Writing

I was looking for an i pad charger yesterday evening. I didn't find the charger, which surprised me not one bit.  I never find what I'm looking for, but often I find something else that I've mislaid.

That's right--I found my lost copy of On Writing by Stephen King.

I love this book. I've read and re-read it, but thought I'd lost in in one of our moves. I can't tell you how excited I was to discover it tucked away in our guest room closet.

Do you guys have a favorite book on writing? My favorties would be Stephen King's On Writing, and Donald Maass' Fire in the Fiction. Both are just wonderful.

Guess what I'll be doing this weekend?

  1. Read Bradbury's Zen in the Art of Writing.

And while you're at the store, get a copy of Gaiman's Smoke and Mirrors. It's a short-story collection with blurbs about each story. Read the blurb, then the story, and move on to the next story.

Also, read as many forwards and afterwards and author's notes as you can from any Vonnegut book you can lay hands on. This is especially true for his short story collections.

In fact, in general, read the author's notes and the list of thank-yous.

  2. Eric,
Thanks for the recommendations. I'll have to pick those up. I've heard Zen in the Art of Writing is amazing, but had not heard about Smoke and Mirrors.
